‘Trinty’ to Debut on Netflix in December
Unfortunately, it has Richard Madden doing an American accent.
When Netflix initially announced it had greenlit Trinity, the newest political thriller from U.K. writer Jed Mercurio, we noted that the character descriptions included the Americanized “Secretary of Defense,” even though the British title for the position is “Secretary of State for Defence” and is usually referred to as “Defence Minister.” However, the only two cast members announced at that point were from the U.K., Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Richard Madden. Moreover, with Mercurio’s track record of setting his thrillers, like Line of Duty, in places like Birmingham, we thought this might be an error, given Netflix is an American company and trades reporting on it are based in California.
We were wrong. Despite both series leads being British, and Mercurio bringing a very U.K. sensibility to his writing, Trinity is not a British-based series. In fact, while much of the action is set in international waters aboard various naval vessels (mostly submarines), when the show docks on dry land, it does so in Washington, D.C. More importantly, while Madden and Mbatha-Raw are the highest-profile cast, the rest of the ensemble is American, and both British actors sport their best American accents.
Well, ok, Mbatha-Raw is sporting her best American accent – having starred in various Marvel series since 2020, she’s had a lot of practice. Madden, on the other hand... well, he’s doing his best.
Here’s the series synopsis:
A heroic female naval officer becomes involved with the outwardly charismatic secretary of defense, only to discover he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy.
Commander Katherine Decker is second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine. When she develops an unlikely bond with Secretary of Defense Webb Preston, she finds herself drawn into dangerous machinations surrounding a top-secret program code-named Trinity.

Commander Tom Reyes.

Mercurio serves as writer and showrunner on the series; director Michael Cuesta (Homeland) helms the first two installments. Both executive produce, along with Bradley Gardner, and Wendy Mericle & Jimmy Mulville, for Hat Trick Mercurio (HTM) Productions.
