It’s unfortunate that so many viewers are likely unfamiliar with MGM+’s adaptation of Robin Hood. One of the best adaptations of the legend in recent memory, it’s a retelling that positions its story in the broader historical context of the time period, blending political and court intrigue alongside a thoughtful origin story for a one-day folk legend.

(TL; DR: It’s genuinely great.)

The series stars Jack Patten (War Machine) and Lauren McQueen (Belgravia: The Next Chapter) as Robert of Locksley and Marian of Huntington. He’s the son of a Saxon forester. She’s the daughter of a Norman Lord. The star-crossed vibes practically write themselves, as both must navigate the complex cultural and political landscape of an England still establishing its identity in the wake of the Norman Conquest.

Production is now underway on the show’s ten-episode second season, which is beefing up its supporting cast as the series’ world expands beyond Sherwood Forest. James Purefoy (Outrageous) will play King Henry II, the formidable English monarch whose ruthless vision for his kingdom sets the season’s events into motion. (And who, historically speaking, has a rather fraught relationship with his wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine.)

Colin O’Donoghue (Once Upon a Time) is his eldest (surviving) son, Prince Richard — who will one day come to be known as the Lionheart — and Luke Roberts (Holby City) is the ambitious Amaury D’Montfort, a Norman noble with the kind of political aspirations that put him at the center of the power struggle in Nottingham.

Luke Roberts, James Purefoy, and Colin O'Donoghue join the cast of 'Robin Hood' Season 2 (Karina Lidia/Joseph Sinclair/Teren Oddo)

Here’s the Season 2 synopsis.

Season two of Robin Hood expands the world beyond Sherwood and Nottingham into the treacherous courts of England, France, and Rome, transforming the outlaw rebellion into a high stakes battle for the soul of a kingdom. As the Angevin empire threatens to tear itself apart, Rob and Marian are drawn into the orbit of kings and queens, forced to wield the very instruments of Norman power – politics, gold, and betrayal – to secure a future for the Saxons. What begins as a fight for survival becomes a reckoning with power itself. Sweeping in scope yet intimate in emotion, Season two deepens the romance, sharpens the rivalries, and reimagines the legend as a prestige drama about love, legacy, and the price of becoming history.
