'Summerwater' Is Acorn TV's New Summer Series
Based on the book of the same name by Sarah Moss, 'Summerwater' brings a thriller to Scotland's holiday camping grounds.
Perhaps it is the linear nature of human experience that most TV series decline to play with time, preferring the simplicity of installments that unfold as most things do, in the order of story progression. However, because most TV shows do not experiment with this aspect of the medium, those that do tend to stand out. Of course, various time-slipping science fiction series make this sort of thing their bread and butter. But when it's a medical show, like The Pitt's real-time single shift seasons, a family drama, like This Is Us' interpolated triple timelines, or a tight quarters thriller like Hijack, the move to run the clock back and forth between (or within) episodes can be a very effective method of storytelling.
That's one reason Channel 4's Summerwater was such an interesting take on the family thriller. On the surface, it looks like the typical drama that airs on Channels 4 and 5: a suspenseful thriller involving five individual families whose vacations are interrupted by a terrible tragedy. However, the series is set over the course of one day on a remote Scottish holiday campsite, with each of the first five episodes covering the same set of events, seen through the different perspectives of the five families staying in the cabins.
As the show's logline reads: "5 Cabins, 24 Hours, 1 Fire." Only by experiencing the day through all five perspectives can viewers find out who set it.
Here's the series synopsis:
Based on Sarah Moss’s best-seller and set against Scottish loch-side cabins, Summerwater takes us on a journey of wit, heart, and tragedy. An unflinching yet empathetic look at human nature across generations, the series provides a riveting portrait of the divided nation that is modern Britain.
Each episode is set over the same 24 hours and seen through the different perspectives of the inhabitants in each cabin. In a Scottish holiday park enduring unpredictable weather, the residents of Summerwater attempt to escape life's problems in the serenity of isolation. Far from a relaxing retreat, Summerwater turns out to be a mysterious, all-knowing place, where residents are confronted with their deepest desires and darkest truths. Weaving together the lives of several families, as they are observed closely from their disparate cabins, Summerwater shows how the simmering tensions between holidaymakers lead to a devastating climax.
