Future Dame Keeley Hawes (Miss Austen) and Freddie Highmore (Leonardo) are back for The Assassin Season 2 as mother-son duo Julie and Edward Green. The series, produced by Australia’s homegrown streaming service, Stan, in partnership with Amazon Studios, was released on AMC+ in the U.S. in the latter half of 2025. While Hawes is more known for costume dramas than killing innocents, the casting combination drew in enough viewers to make the propulsive thriller a hit.

The series was renewed in November 2025, when we were moving house, and we’ve been waiting for more information since then, including who might be joining the duo for Season 2. With filming wrapped, Stan (and Amazon) have released first-look pictures for the new season, along with the casting lineup.

The biggest star joining the series for Season 2 is Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones), who joins the cast as the new investigator tracking the duo, Inspector Cortez. The series describes her as “a sharp Spanish detective whose emotional intelligence and steely ambition should not be underestimated.” Season 1 didn’t have a police inspector foil for Julie, since her son, Edward, was the one doing the investigating. Now that he’s chosen to stick by her, it makes sense that Season 2’s cat-and-mouse game will be with someone outside the family.

Here’s the Season 2 synopsis:

The second season picks up after Edward and Julie have returned from a disastrous trip to Berlin, where they find themselves estranged once again following a mysterious fall-out no one is willing to discuss. Julie’s days as an assassin are far from behind her as she has slipped back to her old ways, whilst navigating something just as perilous… the dating scene. When Edward’s honeymoon with Kayla doesn’t go quite as planned, he must reunite with Julie to take on Spain’s corrupt underworld—but can they survive the job and mend the rift that tore them apart?

Hawes (Miss Austen) and Highmore (Leonardo) return as Julie and Edward. Shalom Brune-Franklin (Great Expectations) reprises her role as Edward’s fiancée, Kayla, and Devon Terrell (Cursed) as her brother, Ezra.

Alongside Tena (Game of Thrones), Season 2 will bring a brand new set of cast members aboard for this season’s story, including Arnaud Binard (Agathe Koltès), Boris Van Severen (Baptiste), Jacqueline Boatswain (Bridgerton), Mehdi Regragui (The Night Manager), Amin Hamada (We Were the Lucky Ones), Lolo Herrero (The Day of the Jackal), Monic Hendrickx (Arcadia), Karl-El Santos (Stags), Casimiro Aguza (Boundless), and Tony Corvillo (The Prince).

Series creators the Williams Brothers, Jack and Harry (The Missing), once again lead the writers’ room. Directors Terry McDonough (Killing Eve)and Sarah O’Gorman (The Witcher) split helming duties across the show’s six episodes, with John Griffin serving as producer. The Williams Brothers, McDonough, Hawes, and Highmore executive produce alongside Sarah Hammond, Daisy Mount & Alex Mercer for Two Brothers.

The Assassin Season 1 is streaming on AMC+. Season 2 does not yet have an official release date, but is expected to premiere sometime in 2027.
