‘The Chelsea Detective’ Begins Season 4 with “Death on the Aether”
“In this job, appearances are everything. Discretion is paramount.”
Season 4 of The Chelsea Detective once again brings the talented and eccentric DI Max Arnold (Adrian Scarborough) to our small screens for four episodes. Max is short, ginger, and dyslexic, relying heavily on visual images to solve cases. He commutes by bicycle and lives on a houseboat moored on the Thames. Frequent, complex murder cases involving the neighborhood’s diverse demographics keep Max and his assistant DS Layla Walsh (Vanessa Emme) busy and fund his passions for classical music and good coffee.
But right now Max is gloomy. His love life is non-existent, his bicycle is broken, and he may or may not have forgotten the birthday of his only relative, his aunt Olivia Arnold (Frances Barber). Olivia calls him in some distress to leave a message that she’s been mugged and her purse stolen. But Max is busy, distracted by a police launch on the Thames, whose crew unload a body bag near the Chelsea Bridge, so she heads to the station in distress, where Layla suggests she could sketch her assailant.
The victim is a butler – Luca Sullivan (Cayvan Coates) who worked for the extremely wealthy fashion designer Claire Curtis (Saira Jackson). We saw Luca’s murder (although not who killed him) – he was bludgeoned and fell into the Thames, his body later snagging on Cadogan Pier near the picturesque Chelsea Bridge. When Max and Layla reach the team, Chief Forensics Officer Ashley Wilton (Sophie Stone) reports the body has been in the water less than twelve hours, with head wounds from a heavy, pointed implement. The team was able to retrieve his waterlogged phone, and with it a loyalty card to a coffee shop and his work ID.
The previous evening, the well-heeled of Chelsea and beyond gathered at the Aether, a posh riverside venue where Claire Curtis hosted a private auction for her company’s charitable foundation. The guests included Joanna Picard (Rosie Cavaliero), owner of the ECHOS agency which hired household staff for the uber-rich, including Claire and Mike Curtis. Her agency is Max’s first stop; Joanna confirms Luca was at the charity event, serving drinks to the guests. She had also provided other workers for the Curtis household/business: house manager Philip Hawksley (Jack Station), and a mother-daughter team, housekeeper Bettina Chalk-Harris (Clare Calbraith) and Personal Assistant Cate Chalk-Harris (Plum Griffiths).
The Aether is the next stop, where the staff demands a search warrant, and Max counters with a request for the guest list. But there isn’t one, or CCTV footage. Fortunately, the guests themselves inundated TikTok and Instagram with images. Meanwhile, DC Connor Pollock (Peter Bankolé) has found Luca Sullivan’s sister in Manchester, but the photograph she sends is not that of the victim. (Oops.) Layla reports (the real) Luca Sullivan has identified the victim as a friend from university, Billy Paige, a journalist who hosts a podcast, The Final Paige.
Claire Curtis’s husband Mike (Gary Lucy), who was not at the silent auction bash, has returned from a trip to Europe. He asks Claire if the police are interested in him. He jokes that Claire was having an affair with Luca, which enrages her and offends house manager Philip Hawksley. Ashley reports that the dead man had no traces of drugs or alcohol in his system, and died by drowning, not of his head wounds. The weapon was heavy, made of metal and spiked at one end, and Max speculates it may have been a boat hook. Ashley agrees it’s a possibility, but every vessel on the Thames has one, and it was probably thrown into the river after the murder.
The next morning Max goes to buy flowers for Olivia, and is surprised by a chance meeting with former girlfriend Roz Chambers (Alexandra Gilbreath). He invites her for a drink, but she counters with an invitation to accompany her on a hike the next day. He accepts, and reassures her that his almost-ex-wife Astrid is in Germany, looking after her sick mother.
DC Jess Lombard (Lucy Phelps) and Max interview Claire, who had no idea of her former butler’s real identity. He had scheduled an appointment with her for that same morning, but she didn’t know why, and neither did anyone else in the household. Claire’s PA, Cate Chalk-Harris, the only one who appears to be grieving, is reluctant to speak, but it’s not because she’s withholding any evidence – she stammers. Max is kind and understanding about her condition, because his grandfather had the same problem. Despite knowing Billy was using a false name, Cate never asked why. (She does tell them she wasn’t at the silent auction – a lie.) Mike Curtis, when interviewed by the team, is incredulous that they believe he had anything to do with Billy. Soon after Cate’s interview, she and her mother, Bettina, are summoned to Claire’s office, where Claire and Mike accuse Kate of stealing money from them and fire her.
Olivia returns to the station with her sketch, a cubist rendering of her mugger which may not be of much use, except for the detail of a tattoo on his neck of a phoenix.
Billy’s flat, it turns out, has been ransacked and his laptop stolen. His family had no idea he was working undercover. Billy’s phone, despite its twelve hours or so in the water, has revealed a few seconds of video made seconds before his death. Still, before the video cuts out, he mentions he’s investigating Bettina, although only the first syllable is audible. When Bettina is interviewed, she claims she knows nothing about it and suggests that he’s using the word “better.” Mike Curtis interrupts the interview and tells Max that Cate has stolen from them, but Bettina insists her daughter is innocent. (Both Cate and Mike had access to Claire’s account.)
Cate admits she texted Billy several times at the Aether event, but she didn’t like crowds and left. The £650 transfer was a reimbursement, but Billy, delving into the account, found another large withdrawal which Cate thinks was made by Mike. Billy kept looking into the accounts, but Cate didn’t know what he found. Billy, she said sadly, was perfect – he made her forget her stammer.
Max is about to cancel his hike with Roz, but Layla encourages him to go, despite it being late. She comes in early and works late, as an avoidance tactic to sorting out her new flat, something Max understands from his move into the houseboat when he and Astrid split up. Max and Roz meet on Hampstead Heath, greeting each other with an awkward kiss. They chat about her son, and Max, for once, silences his phone.
Layla tracks down Olivia’s mugger, Charlie Weir (Charlie Josephine), thanks to his unusual tattoo. He throws a tub of popcorn at her and runs; she gives chase, and handcuffs and charges him after he’s fallen down a flight of stairs.
Max, back home, plugs in his sophisticated audio system and listens carefully to Billy’s recording. This time, he hears very faint piano music in the background and remembers the event had a pianist. (Max recognizes the piece as Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1.) A photograph of the piano at the event, enlarged, shows the music on the stand. Max walks along the Thames Embankment to Aether’s entrance, finds a substance he believes may be blood, and takes a sample for Ashley to analyze. He returns to the station, where he tells the team they now have evidence of where Billy was murdered, and to double-check on social media postings to see if he was working after 10:15 pm.
DC Jess Lombard (Lucy Phelps) finds Mike Curtis lied about his return flight, and he admits to Jess and Layla he arrived at Gatwick hours earlier, during the Aether event, after changing his plans to visit his mother in Paris. “I flew back in early to kill the help?” he asks in disbelief. Then he claims visiting his mum would have upset Claire. But we find out that Claire is having an affair with Philip Hawksley, who is also having an affair with Bettina. Bettina watches, stricken, as the couple closes their bedroom door.
The real Luca had a tip-off to what could be a huge story, and allowed Billy to borrow his name and identity to investigate: Some time ago Bettina, working at Sandringham, had an affair with a “senior royal,” resulting in a pregnancy. Bettina admits that yes, she did get pregnant at Sandringham; she tried to warn Billy off, but he was determined to get a story. Bettina thinks he stayed around because he was in love with her daughter. But Jess is still looking into the complex Curtis finances, including their charitable activities.
Although Billy was originally on the trail of the preposterous “royal baby” story, he discovered the Curtis family finance activities were more newsworthy. Layla suggests the large amounts of money flying in and out of Claire’s account pointed to money laundering. But Claire claims her own history – as a disadvantaged child, in and out of care – inspired her to support children in similar situations, and plans to transfer most of her personal wealth to her foundation, creating a legacy.
Jess has been investigating Joanna Picard’s background, having found she was involved in the theft of a £30,000 diamond necklace from an historic house, and she was caught on CCTV outside Billy’s home the night of his death. Jess whisks out a copy of the search warrant for Joanne’s office and home; Connor finds Billy’s laptop in Joanne’s office.
As they wait for Ashley, Layla asks Max how his date went, and he confesses he may have talked about Astrid too much. Next time, though (sighing heavily), he’ll try not to. Max, Jess, Layla, and Connor gather around a screen to look again at the Curtis finances — comparatively small withdrawals from Claire’s account over the past year amount to £100,000. Cate and Mike both had access to her account. The missing amounts from Claire’s account were deposited into Joanna’s personal bank account.
At the Curtis residence, Philip is looking for Claire, but finds Mike instead, who is drinking, and taunts him, trying to pick a fight. When Layla and Max arrive, they find Claire with Mike, who is unconscious but still alive. When Claire is formally questioned, she says she doesn’t know where Philip is now, but she found him in the house standing over Mike. Philip wanted Claire to leave with him, but she refused. Max tells Claire that Philip and Joanne were in cahoots to get at her money, and despite anything he’d told her, she was Philip’s mark.
Philip is arrested as he tries to board a train out of London. Max tells him it was Joanne’s idea to steal from Claire, and Layla shows him a receipt in his email for the purchase of a boathook. Phil claims the Aether’s boathook had disappeared, and he was responsible for its replacement, but Max describes finding Billy’s blood nearby. Philip admits he killed Billy and took his keys, which he gave to Joanne so she could destroy evidence. Philip claims he loves Claire, but he used her to protect himself. He’d warned Billy the day before and begged him not to involve her, but then Billy let him down.
After the case is wrapped ... Layla returns the ceramic cat, found at the mugger’s apartment, to Olivia, who is thrilled. She is impressed that the mugger saved the cat to give to his girlfriend. Layla leaves work on time for once, and starts to tackle the unopened boxes in her apartment for about a minute before opening her laptop and logging into work. Max makes another attempt to repair his damaged bike, and when a call from Roz comes in, he apologizes for not contacting her; clearly his life-work balance is not great. His inquisitive mind prompts him to take things apart, literally in the case of his bike.
“Sometimes,” Roz says, “you just have to accept it’s time for a new bike.” They agree to another hike on Hampstead Heath.
