The Wylers marriage takes center stage in our first look at The Diplomat Season 4.

‘The Diplomat’ Will Reenter Negotiations in October

Netflix has set a return date for its Emmy-nominated political drama The Diplomat. The fast-paced, high-tension, often-completely-bonkers series stars Keri Russell (The Americans) as Kate Wyler, whose life changed dramatically when she was unexpectedly named American ambassador to the United Kingdom. For starters, her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) is a well-known diplomat himself and not used to coming second in their relationship. But she’s also had to deal with everything from a terrorist attack to a fatal car bombing, as well as the kind of bombshell political betrayals that could bring down governments if they were exposed. It’s not a job for the faint of heart.

The drama’s third season was full of surprises, not the least of which was that newly sworn-in President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) passed over Kate for the position of vice president, deciding to name her husband to the job instead, a decision that threw the Wylers’ already volatile marriage into a whole new level of turmoil. Kate finds an unexpected ally in new First Gentleman Todd Penn (played by Janney’s former The West Wing co-star Bradley Whitford), but to say there’s a lot of adjustment for all involved is something of an understatement.

Season 4 will pick up in the wake of yet another bonkers cliffhanger: The revelation that President Penn and Vice President Wyler secretly signed off on the theft of a Russian nuclear weapon. It’s a move that, as Kate rightly points out, both the Russians and the British will consider an act of war should they find out. How Hal and Grace will deal with Kate knowing such a dangerous and politically damaging secret remains unclear, but the Season 4 trailer hints that Kate wants back into a real partnership with her husband, so it sounds like pretty much anything is possible.

Here’s the Season 4 synopsis:

In Season 4 of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.

“This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” showrunner Debora Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum. “They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person. And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd.”

Alongside Russell, Sewell, Janney, and Whitford, the series’ returning cast also includes Ato Essandoh (Elementary), Ali Ahn (Agatha All Along), Nana Mensah (Big Boys), and Rory Kinnear (Amadeus).

Cahn is back as showrunner and writer for Season 4. She and Russell are also executive producers, alongside Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie.

The Diplomat Season 4 premieres on October 15, 2026, on Netflix. Seasons 1-3 are currently streaming.
