‘Grantchester’s Season 11 Trailer Sets Up Happy Endings for All
'Grantchester' prepares to go gently into that good night with the final season's trailer.
The quintessential cozy crime series, Grantchester, finally draws to a close with Season 11. Out of the trio of popular PBS series from the mid-2010s that lost a major main character after Season 3, alongside Downton Abbey and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, it proved to have the strongest ensemble, weathering not just Rev. Sidney Chamber’s (James Norton) exit at the beginning of Season 4, but also Rev. William Davenport’s (Tom Brittany) at the beginning of Season 9, and making it into double digits before finially giving up the ghost.
Grantchester was lucky – unlike Miss Fisher, the series was not named for the original main character, like the books were. (The original set of short stories was called Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death.) Moreover, unlike Downton, the central romance was not a pair of miscommunicating lovers, but the fast friendship between DCI George Keating (Robson Green) and the parade of Hot Priests that move into the local vicarage, making the shift to an ensemble cast easier.
But all good things must come to an end, including one of PBS Masterpiece’s centerpiece series that helped define this era of public television. The trailer reminds us how much we’ll miss this sweet little show when it’s gone.
Here’s the official final season synopsis:
The final season kicks off in the momentous summer of 1963. Alphy reconnects with his estranged mother and questions his faith. Geordie faces a promotion that could end his crime-solving partnership with Alphy, and Cathy’s career soars. As Leonard discovers his paternal side and Miss Scott faces a life-changing event, the Grantchester family must face love, loss, and forgiveness one last time.

The final season of Grantchester will bring back the core cast for one last ride with Robson Green (The Game) as DI Geordie Keating and Rishi Nair (The Marlow Murder Club) as Rev. Alphy Kotteram. Season 11 also features longtime series stalwarts Al Weaver (Miss Scarlet) as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones (The Feud on Shelbury Drive) as Mrs. C, Kacey Ainsworth (Agatha Raisin) as Cathy Keating, Nick Brimble (War & Peace) as Jack Chapman, Oliver Dimsdale (Mr Selfridge) as Daniel Marlowe, Bradley Hall (Dalgliesh) as DC Larry Peters, and Melissa Johns (Adolescence) as Jennifer Peters (nee Scott).
Series creator Daisy Coulam is lead writer on the show’s final season, with Richard Cookson, Nessah Muthy, and Maya Sondhi joining her one last time. Directors Rob Evans and Chloe Thomas split helming duties with Dan Kay producing. The final season will be executive produced by Coulam, Green, and Nair, plus Emma Kingsman-Lloyd for Kudos, and Susanne Simpson and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece.
