It took the first major wedding between a titled but penniless member of the British gentry and an American heiress for The Gilded Age to finally find its groove. But once series creator Julian Fellowes found his way back to his original inspiration for the series from 2012 – exploring the culture that created aristocratic marriages like Robert and Cora Crawley’s – it was as if the series finally snapped into focus. Opera wars were fun, but the true mark of success in late Victorian New York City was marrying your daughter into the oldest family bloodlines available in the U.K., their feelings and lives be damned.

The confirmation that the show was jumping ahead a few years, from 1884 to 1886, might not seem like a huge leap, but it’s just enough to reach the year when a young Duchess Violet Crawley started herding her son towards the marriage mart in search of a woman possessed of a large fortune. It also gives the series a bit of breathing room after the massive shift in events at the end of Season 3, including the Russells’ separation and Peggy Scott’s engagement.

Production on Season 4 has been underway in New York since early 2026. Those who have been following the 2026 NBA playoffs have probably seen some of the footage posted from the set with the cast in costume, celebrating the oh-so-appropriately named New York Knickerbockers. Perhaps inspired by the videos going viral, here is the first official behind-the-scenes look at the cast while filming.

Here is the current (still very brief) Season 4 synopsis that HBO has deigned to provide:

Bertha Russell changed Society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian forges a new path for herself, and Peggy works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.

New guest stars for the forthcoming season so far include Elizabeth Marvel (House of Cards), James Scully (Modern Love), Neal Huff (Mare of Easttown), Andrew Burnap (Under the Banner of Heaven), Dallas Roberts (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Taylor Trensch (Evil), Dennis Haysbert (Lucifer), Maggie Kuntz (John Proctor is the Villain), Bonnie Milligan (And Just Like That), and comedian Jim Gaffigan as Grover Cleveland, the 22nd (and later 24th) President of the United States.

Fellowes is the creator and writer of The Gilded Age, with Salli Richardson-Whitfield as co-writer; both are expected to return to pen Season 4, with Erica Dunbar continuing as the historical consultant. Director Michael Engler, who has directed episodes every season thus far, will most likely turn up behind the camera again, as will Richardson Whitfield. All are executive producers, along with Sonja Warfield, Gareth Neame, and Bob Greenblatt.

The Gilded Age Season 4 is expected to debut sometime in the second half of 2026. Seasons 1 through 3 are streaming on HBO Max.
