Tessa Peake-Jones Joins ‘Bergerac’ for Season 3
'Bergerac' is officially filming Season 3 with 'Grantchester's Tessa Peake Jones joining the cast.
On the heels of Grantchester’s finale episode, one of the series’ fan favorites has already been announced as returning to PBS. Tessa Peake-Jones, the belovedly stubborn and cranky Mrs. C., is joining the cast of PBS’s latest addition to the lineup, Bergerac, starting with Season 3.
Based on the original series created by Robert Banks Stewart, and which starred John Nettles (Midsomer Murders), DS Bergerac is initially introduced as a detective with Le Bureau des Étrangers (The Foreigners’ Office), a department of the police across the channel in Jersey, France. The original series was defined partly by the lead character’s never-quite-healed leg and hardcore alcoholism. While the new series isn’t quite as cavalier about it, Jim Bergerac’s mental and physical health issues are front and center in this series as well.
Currently, Bergerac is a streaming-only series; Season 1 is scheduled to arrive as a binge on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel. It’s an odd choice for a series full of well-known British actors starring in a show whose name is instantly recognizable to PBS viewers due to airing on local stations and A&E in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Perhaps the lineup for Season 3, which will also include fan-favorite Georgia Tennant as Bergerac’s new love interest, will be enough for PBS to reconsider for Seasons 2 and 3.
Here’s the Season 3 synopsis:
Bergerac embarks upon his most shocking case yet, when his only significant lead in a suspicious death is a DNA match to Jersey’s most notorious unsolved case - the Devil’s Hole murder. To solve the case in the present, Bergerac must dig deep into the past as he uncovers evidence of a satanic cabal that goes right to the heart of Jersey society.
Meanwhile, with daughter Kim away at college, could Jim have finally met his perfect match when he meets down-to-earth physiotherapist Laura, whilst Charlie’s life falls apart when she confronts a home intruder with devastating consequences.
Damian Molony (Being Human) will return to lead the series as the titular detective, with Zoë Wanamaker (Professor T) as his mother-in-law, Charlie Hungerford, Robert Gilbert (Big Boys) as Barney Crozier, and Sasha Behar (Foundation) as boss, Uma Dalal. Season 2 additions Celine Arden (Agatha Raisin) and Luke Nunn (The Last Kingdom) are also slated to return as Kara Molloy and Simon Calvert, respectively.
Season 3 will add Peake Jones (Grantchester) as Carol, Tennant (Staged) as Laura, plus Jason Flemyng (Black Mirror), Lee Ingleby (The Serpent Queen), Sean Gilder (Slow Horses), Alexander Cobb (Towards Zero), Sule Rimi (Day of the Jackal), Matti Houghton (Grace), Liam Garrigan (Belgravia), Elen Rhys (Broadchurch), and Sebastian Armesto (Gangs of London).
Bergerac is based on the original series created by Robert Banks Stewart; Brian Fillis takes over as lead writer from Toby Whithouse (who penned the first two seasons), alongside Catherine Tregenna and Ashley Sanders. Directors Paul Wilmshurst (Jamestown) and Tracey Larcombe (The Hairdresser Mysteries), with Mike O’Regan as producer.
Molony is an executive producer along with Ben Bickerton & Philip Trethowan for BlackLight TV, Brian Constantine for Westward Studios, and Helen Perry and Claire Hookway for UKTV.
Production is underway for Bergerac Season 3, which is expected to be released in the U.K. in 2027. Bergerac Season 1 will premiere as a binge on PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel to stream beginning Sunday, August 16, 2026, and will air on local stations as they see fit.
