Like many ITV detective series, The Bay wasn’t an immediate hit when it debuted in 2019. Starring Morven Christie (Grantchester) in the lead role as DS (later DC) Lisa Armstrong, a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) in Morecambe Bay, located in the economically depressed area of north-west England. Renewed for a second season, which was then delayed due to lockdowns, Season 2 failed to garner much enthusiasm, leading Christie to exit the series.

But ITV believed in the family-liaison take on the standard police procedural and tried again, this time with Marsha Thomason (COBRA) as DS Jenn Townsend, who is hired as Armstrong’s replacement. Thomason turned out to be a much better fit, chemistry-wise, with the core cast, and by the time Season 4 debuted in late 2023, even BritBox had switched the series to a weekly release format in the U.S., despite the streaming service still mostly favoring binge releases at that point.

Season 5 of The Bay debuted in 2025, while we were on hiatus, and is thriving under BritBox’s redoubled efforts to make itself the streaming destination for British shows. Therefore, it’s not really a surprise that ITV announced Season 6 is officially underway and released the first image from filming.

Here’s the Season 6 synopsis:

Morecambe’s Major Investigation Unit is back to investigate the murder of teenage foster child, Logan Marsden. As the case unfolds, divisions in the local community add further strain to the case, and suspicion shifts from people closest to him to figures linked to a criminal operation in the area - revealing hidden dangers and unexpected connections. Away from the case, Jenn and Manning are dealing with personal challenges at home, testing their resilience and professionalism as they fight to get answers for Logan and his family.

Marsha Thomason (COBRA) returns as Morecambe MIU’s Family Liaison Officer, DS Jenn Townsend, alongside cast regulars Daniel Ryan (The Hack) as DI Tony Manning, Andrew Dowbiggin (Silent Witness) as DS James Clarke, and Olwen May (Riot Women) as DC Lou McLaren. Suzanne Packer (Keeping Faith) returns as Jenn’s mum, Anne Townsend, alongside Tara Lynne O’Neill (Hope Street) as Tony’s partner Sinead, and Jacob Butler (It’s A Sin) as his son Kieran.

Season 6 will add guest stars Claire Calbraith (Mr Bates vs the Post Office) and Alec Newman (Dept. Q) as Rebecca and Joe Hollis, Logan’s foster parents.

Series so-creator Daragh Carville is lead writer on The Bay, heading up a team that includes Caroline Carver, Shyam Poppat, Bridget Deane, and Evan Placey. Directors Brian O’Malley (Frauds) and Bindu De Stoppani (Girl Taken) return to split helming duties with Martin Campbell producing. Carville executive produces alongside Catherine Oldfield and Amy Thurgood for Tall Story Pictures.

The Bay Season 6 is currently filming in the U.K. and is expected to debut in 2027. Seasons 1-5 are available to stream on BritBox.
