As expected, Netflix has renewed the critically acclaimed political drama The Diplomat for a fifth season. The announcement comes two weeks after the launch of Season 4.

The Diplomat, which is a bit like the U.S. series The West Wing and the U.K. series COBRA had a big-budget baby, has been a steady mid-sized hit since it debuted in the spring of 2023. The series follows the political intrigue of Kate and Hal Wyler, starring American actor Keri Russell as Kate and British actor Rufus Sewell as Hal.

Season 4 focused on the increasingly unhinged President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), who moved into the Oval Office after her boss died unexpectedly. With Hall now the Vice President and Kate’s best ally, First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) fully siding with his wife, our favorite ambassador found herself anchored only by the current Prime Minister, Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear). Unfortunately for her, Trowbridge is forced to resign partway through the latest season, and his replacement, Bethan Vaughn (Jodie Whittaker), is a brand new problem for Kate to deal with.

By the time Season 4 concludes, Kate is forced to make a major career decision, leaving the show on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger and making the Season 5 renewal announcement a welcome one for fans.

There’s no Season 5 synopsis yet, and it would be spoilery anyway. So here’s the Season 4 synopsis for those who are still working through the backlog and need to catch up:

In Season 4 of The Diplomat, two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, an uneasy pair at best, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.

The renewal announcement does not list a returning cast. However, fans assume that Russell (Austenland), Sewell (Pride & Prejudice), Janney (The Roses), and Whitford (Death By Lightning) will all return. The same is expected of the core supporting ensemble, including Whittaker (Doctor Who), Ato Essandoh (Elementary), Ali Ahn (Agatha All Along), and Nana Mensah (Big Boys). More Season 5 details are expected to be revealed in due course.

Debora Cahn created the series, wrote the first four seasons, and is expected to be lead writer for Season 5. Cahn and Russell also serve as executive producers, alongside Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie.

Seasons 1 through 4 of The Diplomat are streaming on Netflix. Season 5 is expected to premiere in the latter half of 2027.
