‘Young Sherlock’ Adds More A-List Cast for Season 2

'Young Sherlock' lands not one, but *four* major additions to its roster for the forthcoming second season.

The most frustrating thing about Amazon’s Prime Video is that the company (and its namesake streaming service) is big enough that when it actually takes the time and energy to focus on marketing a show properly to the right viewers, that series turns into a hit. The Boys, Fallout, and now Young Sherlock are all proof that Prime Video could be a genuine source of competition for Netflix, Disney+, and other major streaming services. The only reason it isn’t is an atrocious user interface and a PR team that seems bound and determined to treat most of its streaming offerings like cheap second-run fare at the dollar movie theater next door to the flea market.

It helps that Young Sherlock comes from director Guy Ritchie, who made two hit feature-length Sherlock Holmes films. He has also proven himself a reliable hitmaker for the competition: The Gentlemen was one of Netflix’s most-watched series of the year when it originally premiered, and MobLand was a hit on Paramount+ despite a complete failure by the marketing department in the run-up to its release.

It also helps that Ritchie’s name means actors are receptive to joining the series, especially once the series has established itself in the minds of viewers. Hence Young Sherlock landing not one, but four major additions to its roster for the forthcoming second season.

There’s still no synopsis for Season 2, but it’s basically forging its own path from the books from here on out, so here’s the generalized one from Season 1.

Inspired by Andy Lane’s book series, Young Sherlock is an irreverent, action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in a re-imagining of this iconic character.

Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (Picture This) returns for the show’s second season in the titular role, with Donal Finn (The Other Bennet Sister) also back as Moriarty. The rest of the surviving Holmes family will also be back for Season 2, including Natascha McElhone (Hotel Portofino) as Sherlock’s mother, Cordelia, Max Irons (The White Queen) as brother Mycroft, and Holly Cattle (COBRA) as sister Beatrice.

The new cast joining for Season 2 includes Olivia Williams (The Crown), Indira Varma (The Capture), Sophie Skelton (Outlander) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones). Their characters have not been revealed.

Lead writer and showrunner Matthew Parkhill will pen Young Sherlock’s episodes, with Ritchie confirmed to return to direct the first episode of the second season. Parkhill and Ritchie executive produce alongside Simon Kelton, Ivan Atkinson, Simon Maxwell, Dhana Gilbert, Colin Wilson, and Marc Resteghini, with Harriet Creelman co-executive producing.

All episodes of Young Sherlock are currently streaming on Prime Video. Season 2 is expected to arrive sometime in 2027.
