Ever since Gaelic-language offshoot BBC Alba announced the commissioning of The Island (An t-Eilean) in March 2024, we have been waiting to see who in America would be the one to scoop it up. The Scottish noir crime series is the most high-profile drama in both Gaelic and English in television history, with a per-episode budget of £1 million. However, the language barrier – and the Gaelic of it all – made it an oddity for U.S. distributors.

At this point, most of our regular readers are probably familiar with the Cymraeg 2050 initiative. The Welsh government-led movement to restore their endangered Indigenous language, 400 years after it was outlawed by the Crown, has resulted in a slew of TV series filmed in both Welsh and English, so that the next generation will grow up with it as an essential part of the culture. Those shows have been picked up pretty steadily by both BritBox and Acorn TV, with decent viewership for both streaming services.

However, Gaelic is different. To be clear, this is Scottish Gaelic, not Irish Gaelic; the latter is still deeply divisive in the U.K., as it was the language of the IRA. But it still makes the entire enterprise more difficult, despite the series big-budget bonafides and a second season already confirmed. It's also why it's not altogether surprising that the show will debut on Acorn TV instead of BritBox, and, worse, will be relegated to a binge drop, buried between higher-profile weekly series.

Here's the series synopsis for Season 1.

Kat Crichton, a young Family Liaison Officer, is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of the wife of a local tycoon at a remote island mansion. The murder investigation unravels on the island of Leis and Harris, from where Kat mysteriously fled ten years ago – revealing a tense, twisting story of lies, loss, and long-buried secrets.
