Andrew Scott to Play Ian Charleson In Biopic ’Elsinore’
Andrew Scott will star in the biopic of Scottish actor Ian Charleston about his final days before succumbing to AIDS.
Focus Features has acquired distribution rights to the biographical drama Elsinore, a hyper-prestige offering that’s already building some serious awards season buzz. The studio, which reportedly emerged triumphant from a “competitive” bidding war among several, is eyeing an autumn-timed festival launch for the feature, although no specifics are yet known about where it might premiere.
Elsinore dramatizes the story of Ian Charleson, best known to film audiences for his performance as Olympic runner Eric Liddel in Best Picture winner Chariots of Fire. It focuses on the final months of Charleson’s life, when he was playing Hamlet at London’s National Theatre while privately battling AIDS. His performance is considered by many to be one of the greatest portrayals of the Prince of Denmark in theater history, even though he was so ill he couldn’t perform every night.
Charleson died in January 1990 at the age of 40, just weeks after the run concluded. He requested that it be announced after his death that he had died of AIDS, to publicize the condition and raise awareness. It was the first celebrity death in the U.K. openly attributed to the illness.
The film stars Emmy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA-nominated actor Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) as Charleson, opposite his former Fleabag co-star Olivia Colman as his doctor.
Here’s the movie’s synopsis.
A powerful, deeply moving and inspiring story of the actor Ian Charleson who faced incredible odds while preparing to give the performance of his life in Hamlet at the National Theatre in London.

Alongside Scott and Colman, the film features a bevy of buzzy British performers, including Billie Piper (Doctor Who), Johnny Flynn (Ripley), Luke Thompson (Bridgerton), Monica Dolan (Mr Bates vs The Post Office), Juliet Stevenson (Professor T), Joe Locke (Heartstopper), Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood), Matthew Beard (Vienna Blood), David Dawson (The Burning Girls), Kaiff Kirwan (Slow Horses), Dickie Beau (The Gold), and Peter Mullan (Outlander: Blood of My Blood).
The film is written by Stephen Beresford (Pride) and directed by Simon Sloane (The Dig). Scott also executive produces with Stefano Massenzi and Carolyn Marks Blackwood, alongside Andrea Occhipinti of Lucky Red, Gaby Tana of Magnolia Mae Films, and Pete Shilaimon and Mickey Liddell of LD Entertainment.
Elsinore doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but is slated to premiere in theaters before the end of 2026.
