We’re at the halfway point of Grantchester’s final season, and thankfully, that means Alphy’s family drama is getting backburnered this week for... Alphy’s church drama. However, first, a rundown of all the secrets people are currently hiding. Geordie hasn’t told Alphy about the promotion to Superintendent he’s going out for, which everyone in the office assumes he’ll get; Cathy hasn’t told Mrs. C that CeCe’s invoices aren’t adding up; and Jennifer hasn’t told Larry she’s pregnant.

Oh, and Bishop Grey apparently didn’t tell Alphy about the All-Vicar get-together he’s hosting this weekend. That secret doesn’t stay one long, since Alphy and Geordie find an invite in the pocket of this week’s body. Exactly why a rather homeless-looking, soaking-wet corpse with a King James bible in hand had an invite to the party, but Alphy didn’t, he tags along with Geordie and Larry to find out who their corpse might be.

It will surprise no one that Disgraced Vicar David Lane (Jonathan Rhodes) is at the shindig, currently wandering about wearing a guitar. He’s pathetically excited to see Alphy, marveling that Grey included them both, while the Bishop looks deeply annoyed that a vicar he didn’t invite has shown up accompanied by not one, but two detectives. He accepts Alphy as a last-minute add-on, but clearly wants these “Constables” gone, which means for a second week in a row, Alphy will be detecting solo.
