‘Grantchester’s Penultimate Episode Takes Its Final Shot

It must be the penultimate episode of Grantchester, because everyone’s an emotional wrecking ball as this week’s episode starts. Alphy’s done a speedrun into Drunk Sidney territory; Mrs. C’s being a bigot at the idea of Leonard and Daniel (two men!?!) adopting a little boy. Most importantly, Cathy is once again choosing Peter’s gauzy fantasies of success that he’s dangling in front of her over Geordie, taking an overnight trip to London and leaving him alone to sort out if Dora should be allowed to take the bus and see The Rolling Stones concert since Mrs. C refuses to babysit.

(It’s ok, Dora, Mick and the gang will be performing concerts for the next 61 years, you’ll have time.)

Alphy once again heads off to confront his mother, yelling at her for destroying the Ghost Kingdom he had in his head all these years, with the reality that, as a teenage girl, she’d never thought through the potential consequences of her leaving him to be raised by the Church. Of course, Mira sets him straight, reminding him that he completely upended her life too. She’s currently still living day to day with two people she calls family who don’t know her secret, who she’s terrified will reject her when they learn it. In contrast, his found family knows all of his baggage and loves him unconditionally anyway.
