MGM+ Will Journey to ‘Treasure Island’ in October
David Oyelowo is getting a peg-leg and a parrot for MGM+'s take on Robert Louis Stevenson.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s swashbuckling adventure Treasure Island is a classic for many reasons and has been adapted for film and television over 50 times. From films starring actors ranging from Orson Welles to The Muppets to prestige TV prequels (Black Sails) and a take set in the Star Wars universe (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew), it’s a story that’s been proven to work in all kinds of formats and appeal to many different kinds of audiences.
MGM+ is taking the traditional route with its latest update, set to hit our screens in October. Aiming to update the classic for a new generation, the six-part series reimagines the story of a sheltered boy’s transformation into an emboldened young pirate, as young Jim Hawkins discovers a legendary map that purports to point to the location of the infamous Captain Flint’s treasure. Caught between the ruthless pirate Long John Silver and the duplicitous British agent Aaron Graham, Jim and his mother, Bess, must navigate shifting alliances and dangerous secrets to survive.
But hey, maybe they’ll discover unimaginable riches along the way. What else are pirate stories for?

A high-stakes reinvention of the classic, Treasure Island follows teenager Jim Hawkins and his formidable mother Bess as they’re pulled into a deadly race for the treasure of the infamous Captain Flint. Battling for control are Long John Silver—a ruthless survivor who is just as charming as he is cunning —and Aaron Graham, a revolutionary spy seeking to use the gold to upend colonial power. Set in 1788 across storm-battered Cornwall, treacherous seas, and a jungle island soaked in secrets, this is Treasure Island reimagined as a thrilling, immersive, and character-driven epic.

David Oyelowo (Les Misérables) stars as Long John Silver, with Hayley Atwell (Rivals) as Bess Hawkins, Tom Sweet (Great Expectations) as Jim Hawkins, Jack Huston (Mayfair Witches) as Aaron Graham, and Tomer Capone (The Boys) as Billy Bones. The ensemble cast also includes Craige Els (Andor), Tristan Sturrock (Poldark), and Neil Pendleton (Outlander).
The series is created by Robert Murphy (Vera) and directed by Jeremy Lovering (Slow Horses), William McGregor (The Buccaneers), and Paul Walker (Shameless). Murphy and Lovering also executive produce, alongside Colin Callender, David Stern, Scott Huff, and Daniel Gratton. Mark Hedges serves as producer.
Treasure Island will premiere on MGM+ on Sunday, October 11, 2026, and stream weekly episodes through November.
