From here onward, everything Murdoch Mysteries does is probably breaking some kind of record for Canadian TV. In terms of the number of episodes, the series entered Guinness World Records territory at the beginning of this decade, in 2022, as the longest-running scripted hour-long drama in Canadian television history. Since then, every new season has held some kind of milestone, from the show’s 300th episode to the series finally going day-and-date premiere in the U.S. on Ovation.

It will surprise no one that the show is prepping to set yet another record in 2026, entering its 20th season, and once again resetting the bar for longest-running scripted hour-long drama. It will also keep the show on the air (and on Acorn TV) into 2027, setting the series up for its 20th anniversary season in 2028.

The finale of Season 19 hasn’t streamed on Acorn TV yet (and won’t until mid-July), so there will not be any finale spoilers revealed here. Let's just say the cliffhanger at the end of Season 19 will only make American viewers that much more thankful that Season 20 is already in production and will start airing in Canada and on Ovation sometime before the end of 2026.

Since Murdoch Mysteries is a case-of-the-week series, there’s no synopsis as yet, and most likely won’t be until much closer to the season premiere. However, there are rumors that Hélène Joy will return as Dr. Julia Ogden for Season 20, either in a guest star role or as a recurring cast member. (Her last missive at the beginning of Season 19 said she’d be in England “for another year,” setting up her return for sometime in the show’s 20th or 21st season.)

Yannick Bisson has confirmed he’ll return as the titular William Murdoch. Also almost certain to return: Thomas Craig as Inspector Thomas Brackenreid and Jonny Harris as Constable George Crabtree, who have been with the show since its inception. His current crop of co-stars also includes Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Inspector Albert Choi, Shanice Banton as Chief Coroner Violet Hart, Daniel Maslany as Detective Watts, Lachlan Murdoch as Constable Henry Higgins, Arwen Humphreys as Margaret Brackenreid, and Clare McConnell as Crown Attorney Effie Newsome-Crabtree. Guest stars are expected to be announced in due course.

Peter Mitchell will once again serve as showrunner and director. The series is executive produced by Mitchell, Bisson, Simon McNabb, Christina Jennings, and Scott Garvie and produced by Jeremy Hood and Julie Lacey.

Murdoch Mysteries Season 19 is still streaming weekly on Acorn TV through the end of July; Seasons 1-18 are currently available on the platform. Season 20 is expected to arrive simultaneously on the CBC and Ovation in September or October of the 2026-2027 TV season, and then follow on Acorn TV 120 days later (which usually works out to sometime in February).
