‘The Good Ship Murder’ Drops Anchor for Season 3 on BritBox
'The Good Ship Murder' has an anchor date for Season 3 on BritBox.
When Channel 5 announced in October 2022 that it was commissioning The Good Ship Murder from Paul Matthew Thompson, it was hard not to be skeptical. Not that a singing detective series couldn’t work; there was literally a hit series on the BBC called The Singing Detective back in the day. But Thompson had already just premiered Ridley, another “singing detective” series on rival station ITV (and was heading to PBS), and the reviews were not great.
An awkward mix of dour Adrian Dunbar, grey and depressing landscapes, violent thriller mysteries, punctuated by random jazz standards, Ridley barely lasted two seasons. However, it turns out that Ridley walked so The Good Ship Murder could run. The new series was set on a cruise ship in the sunshine, starred singer-turned-actor Shayne Ward, and focused on future romantic possibilities in a will-they-or-won’t-they relationship instead of dwelling on the heartbreak manpain of the past. By the time the first two seasons crossed the pond to stream on BritBox, it was a bona fide hit.
The series has officially been commissioned for Season 4, and there are plenty of changes on the way as the series tries to shift from its original romance to more of an ensemble series where actors are more able to come and go as their careers dictate. But first, Season 3 is heading across the pond to close out summer in America, six months after it aired in the U.K.
Here’s BritBox’s version of the Season 3 synopsis:
Following his sacking from the ship, Jack is lying low - gigging in a dingy bar. A murder in a monastery drives Kate to seek Jack’s help, and the pair finally reconnect romantically (with Jamil’s help), while Jack also gets his job back on the ship, replacing Eve Fontaine, who had temporarily replaced him.

Ward, who rose to fame after winning The X-Factor Season 2 back in the mid-aughts, returns as Jack Grayling, with Catherine Tyldesley (Protection) as First Officer Kate Woods. Season 3 also brings back series stalwarts Geoffrey Breton (The Crown) as Staff Captain Piers de Vreese, Zak Douglas (The Larkins) as Jamil Al-Rashid, and Yuna Shin (The Marlow Murder Club) as the ship’s medical officer, Dr. Sharon Tan.
Alongside them, Season 2 additions Ross Adams (Bait), Kiza Deen (Young Wallander), and James Barriscale (Hijack) will also return. Michelle Holmes (Vera) once again guest stars as Eve Fontaine.
