‘The Good Ship Murder’ Adds New Leads for Season 4

There’s a crew changeover afoot on 'The Good Ship Murder' Season 4, and a Classic Doctor is boarding.

Paul Matthew Thompson (Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators) had to try twice to launch a singing detective series. The first, the now-canceled Ridley, starred Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty) as a dour detective full of man pain in grey Lancashire who incongruously sang jazz standards. The second, far more successful attempt, The Good Ship Murder, stars an actual singer, The X Factor U.K. Season 2 winner Shayne Ward as retired detective Jack Grayling, now a cabaret singer on a cruise ship, in a will-they-or-won’t-they with the ship’s First Officer, Kate Woods (Catherine Tyldesley), solving crimes while floating between exotic locations.

Unfortunately, like Death in Paradise, The Good Ship Murder’s far-flung filming locales have led to significant cast turnover over the series’ three seasons, including Tyldesley, whose departure was announced alongside the Season 4 renewal. Instead of trying to find another woman with whom Ward has chemistry, the series is blessedly pivoting away from romance toward a found-family ensemble (far easier to maintain when the roster changes regularly).

The ship will get a brand-new crew, led by Captain Serena Teller (Fiona Allen), whose status as a trailblazer for women in maritime roles has earned her the nickname “The Iceberg.” Since the show will need time for the two to warm up to each other, it will also introduce Jack’s dad, Eddie (Peter Davison), a retired detective who will help his son solve crimes between songs.

Here's the Season 4 synopsis:

Detective Jack Grayling embarks on a brand new voyage packed with intrigue and danger as First Officer Kate Woods returns for a special appearance marking her final chapter on board. Her departure sets the stage for an exciting new era for Jack, as he navigates fresh challenges, new alliances, and unexpected twists. The new series will introduce a wave of guest stars and new characters as the ship sets sail once more, signalling the beginning of a bold new adventure for the much-loved crime drama.

Ward, Allen (Skins), and Davison (Doctor Who) will lead the Season 4 cast, with Tyldesley (Protection) guest-starring as Woods in the show’s season premiere to pass the baton. Season 4 will also see the return of Zak Douglas (The Larkins) and Yuna Shin (The Marlow Murder Club), who, along with Ward, are now the only remaining cast members from the show’s original roster. The rest of the returning supporting cast includes Ross Adams (Bait), Kiza Deen (Young Wallander), and James Barriscale (Hijack).

Series writers Jeff Povey, Joe Ainsworth, Rob Kinsman, and Kat Rose-Martin are expected to return to pen episodes for the series fourth season, with longtime series director Steve Hughes helming episodes and Jonathan Phillips producing. (Hughes has helmed all but one installment over the show’s first three seasons.) Series co-creator Mike Benson executive produces with Thompson and Andy Morgan for Clapperboard.

The Good Ship Murder Season 4 is currently filming and is expected to debut in the U.K. in early 2027. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on BritBox, and Season 3 is expected to debut Stateside before the end of the year.
