‘The Other Bennet Sister’ Stars Talk Poetry & Indie Pop Inspirations
The main trio of 'The Other Bennet Sister' talk about drawing inspiration from 19th-century poetry and contemporary indie pop.
The Other Bennet Sister, adapted from Janice Wardlow’s novel of the same name, was an immediate smash for BritBox, driving the streaming service’s subscription numbers to an all-time high over the course of its ten-episode run this spring. Just from the trailer, it’s easy to see why. Captivating performances from every member of the cast, paired with strong episodic writing–yes, please. Each episode delivered, again and again, on a winning premise of a sustained look at Mary Bennet’s true essence, beyond her pedantry and resentful sad sack persona. What Austenite could resist?
The actors portraying each of the three sides of the series’ central romantic triangle—Ella Bruccoleri, Dónal Finn, and Laurie Davidson—chatted with Telly Visions in the week leading up to The Other Bennet Sister’s two-episode premiere. In between fits of giggles as they riffed with each other, they shared insights into character development through poetry and music, and reckoned a bit with the fame tsunami threatening to engulf them as a result of the series’s popularity.
The conversation was exactly as charming and effervescent as you’d imagine, and we only wish we’d had a full half-hour with this trio.
