‘Blue Lights’ Season 4 Teaser Lets Us Off with a Warning
The first look at 'Blue Lights' Season 4 is here, and our favorite no-longer-rookies are exercising good judgment.
The first sign that BritBox was about to get serious about making inroads with American audiences came at the end of 2023, when the streaming service announced it was going all in on U.K. hit Blue Lights. The series, which American critics compare to HBO’s seminal police procedural The Wire, was the BBC’s biggest hit that year, and the network was preparing to go all in, ordering a three-season renewal that guaranteed it would run through at least Season 4 in both the U.K. and the U.S.
Since then, BritBox has grown exponentially – only a month or two later, the BBC announced it was acquiring the streaming service. The series has also morphed somewhat on-screen, from a fish-out-of-water black comedy with serious undertones into a deep dive into the lingering trauma of the Irish Troubles, and back again. The show’s lead ensemble of officers, Siân Brooke as Grace, Martin McCann as Stevie, Katherine Devlin as Annie, and Nathan Braniff as Tommy, have bounced back and forth between the show’s two opposing impulses, as it works to strike a balance between serious and laugh-out-loud funny.
Meanwhile, ahead of Season 3 in 2025, BritBox put Blue Lights’ first two seasons on HBO Max, a move that helped Season 3 climb towards sleeper-hit status in the States. As the production prepares for the arrival of Season 4, BritBox has achieved another milestone, with The Other Bennet Sister and A Woman of Substance driving subscription growth to new heights. Whether this combination will vault Blue Lights to the viewership levels it deserves remains to be seen, but at least the first teaser for the new season won’t make a fuss.
Just be more careful next time.
Here’s the Season 4 synopsis:
Three years into their jobs as response officers, Constables Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster, and Annie Conlon are operating at their limit, facing a new threat on the streets that the police can barely control. Meanwhile, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff exposes a dangerous and long-buried secret that leads to chaos both inside the police and across the criminal underworld. As they grapple with big decisions about their future, Grace, Tommy, and Annie must find the courage to face the greatest threat they have ever encountered: the truth.

(BBC/Two Cities Television)
Brooke, McCann, Devlin, and Braniff are once again joined by Joanne Crawford (Outlander: Blood of My Blood), Andi Osho (The Sandman), Frank Blake (Say Nothing), Dearbháile McKinney (Kneecap), Andrea Irvine (Call The Midwife), and Abigail McGibbon (Ballywalter). Season 3 additions Cathy Tyson (Dune: Prophecy) and Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters) also return for the new season, as will Richard Dormer (COBRA) and Jonathan Harden (Time), reprising their respective roles as Gerald Cliff and Inspector Jonty for the first time since Season 1. Hannah McClean (Sick Note) will also return as solicitor Jen Robinson after sitting out Season 3.
Series creators Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson once again co-wrote all six episodes, with director Angela Griffin returning to split helming duties with Sam O’Mahoney (The Wise Guy), with Brendan Mullin producing. Lawn and Patterson co-created the series with Stephen Wright; the three executive produce alongside Louise Gallagher and Nick Lambon for the BBC.
Blue Lights Season 4 is expected to debut in the U.K. before the end of 2026 and will follow on BritBox in the U.S. and Canada in late 2026/early 2027. Seasons 1 through 3 are streaming on BritBox.
