All good things come to an end. Even love stories. Or, as the trailer for Heartstopper Forever seems to indicate, they evolve into something new. Young love has to grow up sometime, after all. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The feature film will bring Netflix’s wildly popular LGBTQ+ series to a close, a drama that has made stars of its leads, Kit Connor (His Dark Materials) and Joe Locke (Agatha All Along), and won the streamer all sorts of accolades for its heartfelt storytelling and unapologetic queer representation. While this may not be the full fourth season that fans wanted, it does mean that his beloved story and its characters will get a proper ending.

Heartstopper Forever picks up almost immediately after the events of the series’ Season 3 finale, which saw Nick (Connor) and Charlie (Locke) firmly together and starting to plan for their future. Now, that future is here, and it’s not as easy as either of them hoped for. The pair — as well as all their friends — will have to navigate the bittersweet challenges and difficult transitions that are part and parcel of growing up. Can first love really last forever? Or will the prospect of a long-distance relationship become too much for them both?

Here’s the synopsis.

Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?
