Despite being defunded at the end of 2025, the PBS Masterpiece schedule has remained largely unaffected in 2026. Part of that is due to the speed of things behind the scenes – PBS has always been on something of a delay compared to its other broadcast brethren, so even though the money has dried up, the schedule hasn’t actually felt the hit yet.

Masterpiece has also been working towards a more independent slate of programming since the mid-twenty-teens. The streaming revolution ended the virtual monopoly public broadcasting had over which British shows made it to American shores. With deep-pocketed competition stealing the shows that PBS once had to itself, Masterpiece was forced to start co-producing series to ensure they would be bound for public broadcasting. By the early 2020s, CEO Susanne Simpson had begun taking the lead on production as well, especially after the debacle of Sanditon, where ITV canceled the show before it ever made it to America.

Of all the programs Masterpiece has taken the lead on, the most successful by far has been Anthony Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland stories, adapted from his own novels Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders, which take a meta-view of the genre by enclosing a period-piece mystery within a contemporary one. Now, the third and final story, Marble Hall Murders, will complete the trilogy in September 2026.

Here’s the third installment’s synopsis.

In Marble Hall Murders, Editor Susan Ryeland is hired to work on a continuation novel of the Atticus Pünd series, written by a troubled young author. When the job leads Susan into another murder case, she unexpectedly finds herself a suspect. In the world of the novel, Atticus Pünd is visiting the island of Corfu when he becomes embroiled in the murder of Lady Margaret Chalfont, whose family he investigates with the assistance of a Greek detective.

Manville and McMullan are the only characters who will return for the show’s first two outings. The third season will introduce a bevy of PBS favorites for the final story, including Mark Bonnar (Guilt), Patricia Hodge (All Creatures Great & Small), Harry Lloyd (I, Jack Wright), Jamie Blackley (Outrageous), Rupert Penry-Jones (The Feud on Shelbury Drive), Anneika Rose (Line of Duty), Daniel Cerqueira (This City is Ours), Danny Sapani (Killing Eve), and Zubin Varla (Andor). As with the first two seasons, most of the roster play dual roles: both as characters in the contemporary world and as fictional versions within the 1950s-set story-within-the-story.

Horowitz wrote all six episodes, adapted from his novel of the same name. Director Rebecca Gatward helmed all installments, with Suzanne McAuley producing. Executive producers are Jill Green for Eleventh Hour Films and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.

Marble Hall Murders will premiere on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 9 p.m. alongside Season 3 of The Marlow Murder Club on most local PBS stations, the PBS app, and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel. All episodes will be available on premiere day for PBS Passport members. As always, check your local listings.
