World War II dramas, whether movies or television series, are a mainstay of the British entertainment industry. From shows like World on Fire and Rogue Heroes to films like Darkest Hour and Dunkirk, it can often feel as though every possible angle of the story has been explored — and sometimes re-explored — a dozen times already. But every so often, a film like Pressure comes along that aims to tell the familiar story of a key WWII moment from an entirely new perspective.

The film, based on the critically acclaimed play of the same name by David Haig (COBRA), centers on the high-stakes weather debate that took place ahead of the launch of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy that included some 300,000 men. Set 72 hours before D-Day, Pressure follows General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Meteorological Officer James Stagg as they debate the likely weather conditions that could make or break the invasion.

Andrew Scott (Ripley) stars as Stagg, a Scottish meteorologist who famously convinced Allied leadership to shift the date of the planned attack from June 5 to June 6 due to a severe storm in the forecast. Oscar winner Brendan Fraser (The Whale) stars opposite Scott as Eisenhower.

Here's the film's synopsis.

In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, and the fate of the free world hanging in the balance, Pressure follows General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Captain James Stagg as they face an impossible choice—launch the largest and most dangerous seaborne invasion in history or risk losing the war altogether.

Alongside Scott and Fraser, the film's cast also includes Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Damian Lewis (Wolf Hall), and Chris Messina (Based on a True Story).

The film is written by Haig and Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai), with Maras directing. It is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Cass Marks, and Lucas Webb, and executive producers include Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, Joe Naftalin, Anthony Maras, Angela Moneke, and Sheeraz Shah.

Pressure will be released in theaters on Friday, May 29, 2026.
