Hulu to Dump 'Alice & Steve' in June

As was expected, Nicola Walker's latest oddball choice of comedy, 'Alice & Steve,' will arrive on Hulu as an undermarketed binge.

If you are the producer of a British series like Alice & Steve, there are specific streaming platforms you really want to find yourself debuting on in the U.S. Netflix is naturally the most preferable – biggest reach, only algorithm that actually surfaces show titles properly, and the easiest to use user interface. BritBox, PBS, and Acorn TV are currently in a three-way tie for second best. Their individual reach might not match Netflix’s, but all three are well-targeted to the right demographic. Prime Video is in third place (with a hefty gap between it and second place) because it has reach, but neither the algorithm nor the user interface to help viewers along.

One would think Disney+, which produced Alice & Steve, would be up there as well. Technically, the combined weight of all Disney-owned networks (ABC, Disney Channel, Freeform, FX, ESPN) plus Hulu should be large enough to compete with Netflix and Amazon in terms of reach. However, there are two problems: British shows don’t debut on Disney+ except in rare cases, as most aren’t deemed “family-friendly” enough. That means they wind up on Hulu, which has little interest in promoting these cast-offs and tends to binge-dump them without bothering to spend money on marketing.

Alice & Steve sadly joins that group, which includes such gems as Such Brave Girls, Big Boys, Say Nothing, Dope Girls, and both seasons of A Thousand Blows, none of which managed to make an impact. While Hulu is certainly a better option than, say, MGM+ (a streaming service the average American doesn’t know exists, let alone subscribes to), we will once again mourn yet another fascinating show from across the pond barely making a ripple as it silently drops into the fathomless ocean of content.

Here’s the series synopsis:

Alice is devastated when her best friend Steve starts dating her 26-year-old daughter, Izzy. She’s going to lose her best friend and her daughter in one fell swoop. Alice tries everything she can to end the relationship. Unfortunately for her, Steve’s more than ready for the attack, and what begins as a perfect friendship devolves into an all-out feud.
A hilarious, messy, and complicated exploration of friendship, family, and love, Alice and Steve is an anti-romantic comedy that asks the question, how far would you go for love - or revenge? Will Alice forgive Steve? Will Steve and Izzy make a relationship work? Amongst all the questions hanging in the balance, one thing is certain: their lives will never be the same again.
