Everything Coming to BritBox & Acorn TV in September 2026

One of Netflix’s aims when it launched the streaming revolution was to create a year-round release schedule, effectively an attempt to destroy the idea of a specifically defined television season that runs from September to May. It speaks volumes how badly the streaming service failed at that aim that in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-Six, American Labor Day is still the marker networks use to kick off new seasons of TV. We’re 13 years into the streaming revolution, and platforms that literally didn’t exist during the broadcast era are treating September and October as the time to start releasing brand-new series and bring back new seasons of old favorites.

Case in point: this list, which, we will note, is mainly comprised of platforms that did not exist a decade ago. (BritBox is now wholly owned by the BBC, but it didn’t start that way when it launched in 2017.) In fact, the one platform that one could argue is a “legacy platform” is Acorn TV, which began as a VHS/DVD distributor at the end of the 20th century, and it’s about to use this coming September as a reset to fix its current “everything debuts on the last day of the month” problem.

Speaking of BritBox, we are thoroughly enjoying watching the higher-ups at the company speedrun a silent format change now that they’re the ones programming BBC Select (which, please remember, is only included if you subscribe to BritBox Premier). Those bulleted lists of documentary highlights are already a thing of the past, as the BritBox Premier offering swaps wholesale to weekly releases of “docuseries,” a term rapidly expanding to include just about anything unscripted that isn’t a comedy or a game show.

(The fact that this is what we consider fun should explain why we run a site like this one.)

Let’s review everything coming to the dedicated niche streaming services in September 2026.

As a reminder, Acorn TV is currently working to flip around the end-of-the-month debut schedule to something more reasonable. August was particularly egregious, with both Blue Murder Motel and The Assassin debuting on the final two Mondays of the month, both of which will run straight through to October finales.

The Sommerdahl Murders Season 7

We knew this would happen eventually – Acorn TV’s tendency to premiere series at the very end of the previous month finally caught up with it. The only new title worth watching that arrives in September is the Walter Presents-adjacent The Sommerdahl Murders Season 7. That’s the Danish one where DCI Dan Sommerdahl solves murders with his estranged wife Marianne, and his best friend/her new boyfriend, Detective Flemming.

Reminder that Season 2 of The Hardacres kicked off in early August and still has a couple more episodes until the finale in mid-September. Meanwhile, The Good Ship Murder Season 3 debuted all of a day after Blue Murder Motel on Acorn TV, so it too will run through the month with a finale arriving in mid-October.

Antiques Roadshow Season 49

In our National Theatre at Home Autumn listings, we noted that on smaller services – especially ones that are new to negotiating or do each title individually – release dates can suddenly shift at the last second. That’s what happened with Antiques Roadshow. Since this is the first time BBC Select is airing it weekly instead of binge-dropping, the release date (which had been August 20) slid back by two weeks. However, it’s rare for shows to slide twice, so we’re fairly confident it will turn up this time.

Cooper & Fry Season 1

We noted when Cooper & Fry Season 1 landed an early BBC Premier release that the regular BritBox arrival wouldn’t be far behind, and indeed, it is not. The new detective series stars Robert James Collier (Downton Abbey) and Mandip Gil (Doctor Who), and we should warn you: it is not a comedic or lighthearted series, but a real class-conscious look at the world as it currently exists. Season 1 episodes will start arriving for regular BritBox subscribers in early September.

Cooper & Fry Season 1 debuts with two episodes on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and will follow with one episode a week through early October. All episodes are already streaming via BritBox Premier.

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Season 1

In actual docuseries, BBC Select will debut the three-part globe-trotting historical deep dive Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, hosted by historian Bettany Hughes. Hughes has an entire subheading in the BBC Select library, so expect many more like this to follow.

The Travel Show Season 9

Not exactly a docuseries, but close enough, BBC News’ The Travel Show is really more of a running travelogue show. Much like Antiques Roadshow, The Travel Show has been binge-dropping on BBC Select for a while; Season 9 will be the first to be granted a weekly release. We assume its September arrival is because it’s the least likely time for people to be on vacation.

The Travel Show Season 9 debuts on BBC Select/the BritBox Premier Tier on Saturday, September 12, 2026, and will follow with one episode a week through the end of October.

Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence

BritBox is betting big on Agatha Christie, as it should, as Why Didn’t They Ask Evans and Murder Is Easy were both critical darlings. Josh Dylan (The Buccaneers) and Antonia Thomas (Still Up) star as the titular duo in Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, with Imelda Staunton as the show’s A-list insurance, in the first-ever modern-day set adaptation of Partners in Crime. 

Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence Season 1 debuts on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, and will follow with one episode a week through the beginning of October. All episodes will be available on premiere day for BritBox Premier subscribers.

Along with the debut of Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, BritBox is adding more older titles to the Christie catalog:

Showtrial Seasons 1+2

Originally released on Sundance Now in July 2022, the first season of Showtrial went unwatched, and Season 2 (released in the U.K. in 2024) never showed up. Blessedly, Sundance Now’s recent format change has freed the show up to move to BritBox. Season 1 will arrive as a binge at the top of the month; Season 2, which was far superior to the first, with a genuinely banger cast that includes Francesca Annis, Adeel Akhtar, and Michael Socha, will then follow as a weekly release from BritBox a few weeks later.

All six episodes of Showtrial Season 1 will stream on BritBox on Thursday, September 3, 2026. Season 2 debuts with two episodes on Thursday, September 24, 2026, then follows with one episode a week through mid-October. All episodes of Season 2 will be available on premiere day for BritBox Premier subscribers.

All My Sons 

From November 2025, filmed in Wyndham’s Theatre, London, All My Sons starred Bryan Cranston (The Diplomat), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), and Paapa Essiedu (The Capture) in a new adaptation of Arthur Miller’s classic, directed by Ivo Van Hove. The play played in cinemas in the spring of 2026, and now reaches National Theatre at Home less than a year after its original debut. Tom Glynn-Carney (House of the Dragon) and Hayley Squires (The Night Manager) also feature.

All My Sons begins streaming on National Theatre at Home on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Teeth ’n’ Smiles

The 50th anniversary revival of David Hare’s rebel play, Teeth ’N’ Smiles, featuring Rebecca Lucy Taylor (I Hate Suzie), originally opened in the Duke of York’s Theatre in March 2026. Billed as “a play with original music” – aka it doesn’t technically qualify as a musical – the show is about the fictional Maggie Frisby, once the roaring voice of 60s counterculture, now broke and disillusioned.

Teeth ’n’ Smiles begins streaming on National Theatre at Home on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
