The Mustaches are Here, and they are... a choice.

I said I would reserve judgment on the Hercule casting of Edward Bluemel as Hot Poirot until I saw the mustaches. Now, the Mustaches are here, and the results are... a choice.

The good news is that the mustaches are not the original David Suchet waxed curlyques. Those were probably as historically accurate as one could get, but they’re also the opposite of sexy. The better news is that it’s not the comedically bad mustaches that Kenneth Branagh sported in his painfully misguided movies.

The best news is that, for a man whose facial hair is dictated by history, Bluemel manages to look hot. But is he a Hot Poirot? That’s less certain. Bluemel doesn’t really look like a Poirot in this photo. He looks like a Hastings (a character who is supposed to be pretty but dumb). He looks like the character in an episode who everyone knows is going to be the murderer, because he’s the best-known guest star of the week.

That’s not to say it’s not the point – this is, after all, supposed to be a Hot Poirot. Also, we are (in the 2020s) in a moment where mustaches are on the rise in popularity, so perhaps this will work on a cultural wavelength. However, the specter of the famous 1970s “pornstache” has been haunting all those young men sporting them (sorry Jacob Elordi, it’s a real problem), and sadly, I would say Hot Poirot is a borderline case in that department.

I’m here for Hot Poirot, not so much Pornstar Poirot. How about you? Discuss.
