It’s been almost five years to the day since the BBC first announced in 2021 that it was optioning Nikki May’s global best-selling debut novel, Wahala. At the time, with Lockdown 3 in full effect, no cast attached and no American co-producer, there was an expectation that it would be back-burnered for a little bit. Five years is a bit longer than a little bit, but considering the cast that’s signed on, perhaps the wait was worth it.

The novel was praised upon release for its fresh angles on racism, gender, and identity, all of which were inspired by May’s own experiences immigrating from Nigeria to London as a biracial woman. The story focuses on three besties: Boo, a research scientist-turned-housewife raising a daughter with her husband; Simi, a fashionista whose husband is pressuring her to get pregnant; and the unmarried Ronke, who makes bank as a dentist and is looking for a Nigerian husband. But when Simi’s childhood BFF, Isobel, moves into the neighborhood and manipulates her way into their group, it upsets the balance of power.

A story about the bonds between Black women, and how they can and can’t be broken, deserves a stellar cast, and on this front, the BBC delivers with a quintet of A-list actors that takes this from “potentially good TV adaptation” to “must-watch.”

Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, Susan Wokoma, and Genevieve Nnaji will star in 'Wahala' (BBC)

Here’s the series synopsis:

Based on Nikki May’s debut novel of the same name, Wahala (a Nigerian word meaning ‘trouble’) is a gripping and surprising six-part thriller. The show weaves between four Nigerian-British women in their thirties, navigating careers, love, and family in present-day London, and their childhood homes, where danger and mystery abound. When dark secrets and even darker pasts threaten to shatter the women’s lives, they and their friendships are pushed to their limits. Trouble follows closely behind. Tensions rise, loyalties fracture, and long-buried truths surface, triggering a chain of events with shocking and tragic consequences. Wahala dey o!

The female-led cast stars Cush Jumbo (Criminal Record) as Boo, Adelayo Adedayo (The Responder) as Simi, and Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes) as Ronke, best friends who have shared every aspect of life for years. Nigerian screen icon Genevieve Nnaji (Half of a Yellow Sun) rounds out the main ensemble. The rest of the cast is expected to be announced in due course.

The series was adapted by Theresa Ikoko (Get Millie Black) from Nikki May’s best-selling novel. Ikoko executive produces the series alongside Elizabeth Kilgarriff & Craig Holleworth for Firebird Pictures and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC.
