‘East of Eden’ Puts Its Controversial Character Center Stage
John Steinbeck's classic is finally getting the prestige limited series treatment.
Netflix has released the first teaser for its limited series adaptation of East of Eden, a sprawling (admittedly deeply American*) story about good and evil, love and betrayal, greed, ambition, and self-acceptance. Described as a more modern take on John Steinbeck’s classic novel, the series hails from Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks), the granddaughter of famed director Elia Kazan (A Streetcar Named Desire), who previously adapted the novel as a feature film in 1955.
(We made the executive decision to cover Edith Wharton with The Buccaneers, and are extending that same grace to Steinbeck.)
A multi-generational saga spanning the American Civil War to the end of World War I, East of Eden reimagines the Biblical story of Cain and Abel through the intertwined lives of two families in California’s Salinas Valley.
Though the novel features around a dozen main characters at various points, the Netflix series appears to put one of Steinbeck’s most controversial figures front and center. Florence Pugh (Little Women) is set to star as Cathy Ames, one of literature’s most fascinating and deeply amoral figures. Is Netflix about to give her the vaguely sympathetic anti-hero treatment? If the trailer is anything to go by, it sure looks like it.
Here’s the series synopsis.
This modern interpretation of Steinbeck's masterpiece will explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames.
Alongside Pugh, the series’ cast is positively stacked, featuring a mix of British and American actors. The series features Martha Plimpton (Prime Target) as Faye, Ciarán Hinds (The Dry) as Samuel Hamilton, Tracy Letts (A House of Dynamite) as Cyrus Trask, Christopher Abbott (Bring Them Down) as Adam Trask, Joe Anders (Lee) as Aron Trask, Mike Faist (West Side Story) as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee (Warrior) as Lee, and Joseph Zada (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping) as Cal Trask.
Kazan wrote the screen adaptation and serves as a co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart (Vikings: Valhalla). Garth Davis (Top of the Lake) splits helming duties with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (Lady Chatterley’s Lover). Pugh, Stuart, Kazan, and Davis are all executive producers, alongside Antoine Douiahy and Zack Hayden.
East of Eden doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it’s expected to arrive on Netflix in the latter half of 2026.
