The ‘Kill Jackie’ Trailer Is Double-Barrelled Fun
Oscar Jaenada and Catherine Zeta-Jones in 'Kill Jackie' (AMC+)

The more we see of Catherine Zeta-Jones’ forthcoming Kill Jackie, the more we feel certain this is the hit that AMC+ needs.

The new eight-part series is based on The Price You Pay by best-selling author Aidan Truhen (the pen name of Nick Harkaway). But that’s less important than the formula it follows. It seems that AMC+ is taking a cue from its more successful streaming service sibling, Acorn TV, by taking an under-employed actor whose heyday was in the ‘90s/’00s and putting them in a series that fits its brand of genre tropes. For Acorn, that brand is cozy crime, and so far, following this format has created success stories like My Life Is Murder, Harry Wild, Art Detectives, Irish Blood, and You’re Killing Me.

AMC+ has two major tropes associated with it: supernatural thrillers (Interview with the Vampire, The Walking Dead, etc) and gangster/serial killer thrillers (Gangs of London, Killing Eve, and This City Is Ours, to name but a few). Of those, Killing Eve was already halfway to the Acorn formula – Sandra Oh wasn’t quite as underemployed as, say, Jane Seymour, but given another five years, she would have been.

The trailer certainly makes Kill Jackie feel like Killing Eve’s more gangster-focused successor, with the same laugh-out-loud, tongue-in-cheek approach to violence. But it’s Zeta-Jones who is riveting as the titular character, and may finally get audiences to start subscribing in droves.

Here’s the series’ synopsis:

Kill Jackie follows Jackie Price who has spent the last twenty years living a quiet, luxurious existence selling fine art while remaining anonymous after escaping a criminal past. Her carefully constructed world is shattered when she discovers that The Seven Demons, a squad of ruthless assassins, have been hired to kill her. Jackie will need to unleash her old instincts and execute a dangerous plan to take down the Demons.
