It continues to boggle that there is no premium mainstream service for Black Americans to find streaming programming in this country. There are a few half-hearted offerings that handwave at the idea: BET+, Allblk, and We TV+ come to mind. Some more general services attempt to maintain a diverse programming roster, like Tubi and Hulu. But in a country where there are multiple Latino-focused streaming services, the fact that no one in Hollywood seems to have clued in that there is a massive amount of money being left on the table because there’s nothing directly aimed at the Black middle class is as disheartening as it is racially ugly.

It’s why, unlike some of my peers, I am perfectly good with Starz wandering away from the original plan to appeal to lovers of historical period dramas like Outlander, The Serpent Queen, and the White Queen/White Princess/Spanish Princess non-trilogy. There are multiple streaming services out there to provide those, and let’s be honest – their budgets and taste levels are better.

I much prefer Starz to continue with the slow realization that there is a giant underserved audience right in front of its nose, and to lean into it. So far, the streaming service has made massive hits out of the Power universe (Ghost, Raising Kanan, Force), P-Valley, Run the World, and the recently announced untitled series set in Texas’ Black rodeo circuit. Moreover, I’m very pleased that Starz is not leaning too far away from its British roots either, with the announcement of a brand-new Black British series, marking the first the network’s wholly owned, set in the world of U.K. boxing, called Fightland.

Here is the forthcoming series’s full synopsis:

Fightland follows a disgraced, formerly incarcerated boxing champion who returns to London to seek vengeance against the crime syndicate he thinks betrayed him. With edge-of-your-seat action and populated by dangerous characters, this is a world of money and power unlike any seen before.
On the night Duke Kilroy becomes world heavyweight champion, a vicious assault leaves his brother, Calvin, dead, causing Duke to snap and results in him spending eight years in a U.S. prison. Upon his release, and after having made a sinister discovery, Duke returns home seeking vengeance against the man he believes set him up – the criminal kingpin and former promoter, Kingsley Marshall. But Kingsley has vanished, leaving his children and wife, Joy, who happens to be the love of Duke’s life, to pick up the pieces.
Working with a cartel desperate to control London’s drug market, Duke begins a high-risk game of infiltrating Kingsley’s empire to destroy it from within and smoke out his enemy. But amidst a volatile criminal landscape, and competing influences threatening to pull him off course, Duke will need to channel everything that made him a champion fighter into his bloody pursuit to win the ultimate victory – revenge for his brother.
